The Most Common Myths About

Knee Pain

You've Been Told By Doctors, Friends And Even Social Media That Have Probably Led To More Pain

At Gareth Stables’ clinic, we frequently encounter common myths about knee pain and problems. Gareth believes it’s crucial to address these misconceptions by sharing science-based facts to ease your worries and provide clarity.

Here are some of the most common myths patients have been told that can worsen their knee pain and prevent them from living the life they deserve. At our Cheshire clinic, we’re dedicated to debunking these myths and setting the record straight.

MYTH #1 - 'WEAR AND TEAR' MEANS YOU NEED TO REST AND AVOID EXERCISE
One common myth Gareth Stables encounters is that ‘wear and tear’ or ‘bone-on-bone arthritis’ requires complete rest and no exercise. While rest may be necessary initially for flare-ups or injuries, long-term inactivity weakens muscles and prolongs recovery. Exercise, on the other hand, strengthens muscles around the knee, helping manage pain, reduce inflammation, and maintain function. The belief that exercise worsens wear and tear often leads to prolonged rest, which can actually make things worse. Pain during exercise is typically caused by inflammation, not joint damage. With proper guidance, like physiotherapy or knee injections, you can safely increase activity and stay active. Gareth offers knee injections at My Knee Doc to reduce pain and inflammation, helping you get back on track.
MYTH #2 - A CARTILAGE TEAR ALWAYS REQUIRES SURGERY
A common myth Gareth Stables addresses is the belief that a knee condition, like a cartilage tear on an MRI, always requires surgery. While this idea is often reinforced by family, friends, or past experiences, most cartilage tears don’t need surgery. Gareth’s approach begins with a thorough assessment. While a cartilage tear can cause pain, surgery is usually only needed for significant issues like locking or instability. Non-surgical treatments, such as physiotherapy or injections, are often very effective. Keyhole surgery and ACL surgery are options but not always necessary. Many people, including athletes, recover well with physiotherapy and muscle rehabilitation alone. Surgery is considered only when necessary, and Gareth prioritizes non-surgical options first. His goal is to provide personalized care, ensuring that if surgery is needed, it leads to a successful recovery. Early diagnosis and non-surgical treatments can often lead to a full return to activity.
